Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi said the vibrant celebrations of the Kalgwai Fishing Festival held over the weekend, in Auyo Local Government Area is significantly promoting unity among the society including fishermen, herders, and farmers.
Speaking at the event, the Governor noted that the state is making steady progress in the fisheries sector through targeted interventions.
Adding that the annual festival goes beyond cultural celebrations to serve as a bold initiative that prioritizes fisheries development.
Governor Namadi disclosed that substantial provisions have been made in the 2026 Approved Estimate for all aspects of livestock development, reflecting the state’s commitment to transforming the sector through infrastructure development, capacity building, and strategic partnerships.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Abdurrahman Salim, described the festival as both a cultural and economic milestone for Jigawa State.
He highlighted the ongoing initiatives that include restocking of water bodies, capacity building for youth and women, and expanded fish production programmes aimed at sustaining livelihoods, food security, and economic prosperity.
He said the festival was first introduced in 2003 and revived by the present administration, the Kalgwai Fishing Festival continues to serve as a platform for promoting fisheries development and strengthening community ties across the state.
Also one of the fishermen, Mallam Audu Galgwai, expressed happiness over the one-day event, saying the display of culture has helped to rekindle the past memories.
