Tension has risen in parts of Plateau State following the alleged poisoning of many cattle on Friday evening while grazing around Kwi village in Riyom Local Government Area.
The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Plateau State, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the incident, recalling that a similar episode occurred in the same community last week, where six cattle reportedly died after consuming poisoned substances.
Babayo said the association had promptly notified the Sector Commander of Operation Enduring Peace in Barkin Ladi, who deployed personnel to the scene for assessment. He noted that the exact number of affected cattle was still unknown, as more than 100 animals were grazing at the time of the incident.
He condemned the development, describing it as a “deliberate attempt to provoke herders and achieve a hidden agenda,” and urged security agencies to investigate those responsible.
Speaking on the broader concerns of the herding community, Babayo alleged that cattle rustling and targeted attacks had increased in recent days.
“We are being pushed to the wall,” he said. “Just on Wednesday, over 160 cattle were rustled and many others poisoned. We remain peaceful and law-abiding, and we urge our members to stay calm and allow security agencies to do their work.”
When contacted, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, confirmed awareness of the report, stating that personnel had visited the scene and further updates would be provided.
Reacting to the allegations, the National Chairman of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Barr. Solomon Dalyop, said they were unaware of any poisoning incident and insisted that “Fulani should leave Plateau so that everyone can live in peace.”
He further alleged that herders carried out an attack in Dronk, Foron, on Friday evening, leading to the death of three persons and rustling of cattle.
