The Federal Government’s measures to mitigate flooding in Nigeria, including Jigawa State, are expected to yield positive results.
According to Mr. Williams Fugu, Director of Legal Matters at the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Presidential Flood Mitigation directive has led to the release of N3 billion to each state in the federation, including Jigawa.
This funding aims to address the root causes of flooding, such as poor drainage systems and careless waste disposal.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Federal Secretariat in Dutse, Fugu, representing the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, emphasized the importance of public awareness and adherence to early warning advisories issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
He said NiMet’s advisories have a 90% accuracy rate, enabling communities to prepare for potential floods.
Fugu noted that several states, including Niger, Kogi, Rivers, Anambra, and Bayelsa, have suffered severe flood effects in recent years.
The NOA official urged the public to take heed of NiMet’s warnings and work together to prevent flooding.
By clearing drainage systems and avoiding waste dumping, residents can significantly reduce the risk of flooding in their communities.
He therefore said the Federal Government’s initiative is expected to bring relief to Jigawa State and other affected areas, minimizing the devastating impact of floods on lives and property.
