Jigawa State has emerged as the fastest growing state in internally generated revenue (IGR) among the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in 2024.
This is contained in a letter nominating Mallam Umar Namadi for the Governor of the Year in IGR Award 2025.
According to data from the Joint Tax Board (JTB), the state grew its IGR by 127.31% from N27.54 billion in 2023 to N62.60 billion in 2024, making it the third fastest growing among the 37 subnationals in the country.
Dr. Nasir Sabo Idris, Executive Chairman of Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service (JIRS), who received the letter on behalf of the Governor, said Namadi’s leadership has been credited for this achievement.
He also attributed the state’s performance to the Governor’s long-standing role in re-engineering the IGR landscape.
He said Namadi’s experience as Commissioner of Finance and Deputy Governor laid the groundwork for the state’s current success.
Stressing that the Governor’s vision and leadership have driven IGR growth, with the state generating 31.94% of its total revenue internally.
The state’s IGR ranking is impressive, with Jigawa ranking 14th among 37 subnationals in total IGR collections, 5th among the 19 Northern states and FCT, and 3rd among the seven states of the North West Zone in 2024.
This achievement surpasses other states in the North, such as Katsina, Niger, and Bauchi, as well as states in the South like Osun, Ondo, and Cross River.
Mr. Frederick Apeji, Chairman of Alford Conferences Limited, praised Jigawa’s achievement, noting that the state’s performance is a testament to the effectiveness of its revenue generation strategies.
He explained that the Nigerian States IGR Awards aim to encourage healthy competition among states, promoting revenue growth and collaboration.
