The Jigawa State Government has initiated efforts to retain its number one position as an Open Defecation Free (ODF) state in Nigeria.
To achieve this, the Ministry of Environment, through the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to train 270 environmental health workers.
However, the training aimed at equipping the workers with the necessary skills to promote environmental health and sanitation in the state, thereby consolidating Jigawa’s ODF status.
Speaking shortly after flagging off of the training on Tuesday, the state commissioner for Environment and Climate change Dr Nura Kazaure said, the participants will be oriented on how to be going from house to house health Inspection ( traditional Duba Gari) and advice the citizens on how to sanitized their houses to achieve hygienic environment.
The commissioner maintained that, Jigawa government has already embarked on construction of latrines in schools, Motor parks, Markets and other public places across the state.
Dr Nura added that the arrangement of engaging over 100 casual environmental workers (J-environment) has gone far to meet the target of making a better Hygienic environment in Jigawa.
Also making his remarks, the Managing Director Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) Sanitarian Adamu Sabo said, about 270 environmental workers are to benefit from the orientation.
He said, participants are from State and local government WASH department with 10 participants from each of 27 local governments.
He then commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for his support to the agency and UNICEF for collaborating with Jigawa state government on environmental sanitation and climate change issues.
