The Jigawa State Government, through the World Bank-funded Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) project, has spent over N200 billion on controlling gully erosion in the state.
This was announced on Tuesday by the Commissioner of Environment and Climate change, Dr. Nura Ibrahim Kazaure, during the 2025 World Desertification and Drought Day celebration held at the Manpower Development Institute in Dutse.
The celebration, themed “Restore the land, unlock the opportunities,” aimed at raising awareness about land restoration and sustainable development.
Dr Kazaure, represented by Permanent Secretary Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Namadi, urged citizens to cooperate with the government’s efforts in managing climate change.
He highlighted that the ongoing projects, including sand dune stabilization and erosion control initiatives.
He however said the Managing Director of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), Samaritan Adamu Sabo, emphasized the agency’s commitment to land restoration and sustainable landscape management.
“JISEPA has collaborated with UNICEF and other partners on public enlightenment campaigns, plastic waste management, and tree planting initiatives.
“Notably, 5.5 million trees were planted in 27 local governments last year, with a similar number being nurtured for planting this year,” he said.
